Economy settings have become a very popular features of today’s appliances. In a world that’s increasingly aware of energy and resource consumption, especially as it relates to our growing utility bills, these settings are put in place to help us save. While many of the appliances that have economy settings are providing a greener, less expensive way to use them, not all are actually saving you water, electricity, or money. To find an appliance with the best economy settings, you need to do a few things first. Here’s how to find and use an appliance with economy settings to their absolute maximum benefit.

Look for the Energy Star Appliances

Energy Star-certified appliances go through rigorous, third-party testing to earn those certifications, and the Energy Star company does not take their jobs lightly. Everything from the amount of power consumed to water used is taken into account during testing, and the regulations are constantly updating to ensure that appliance companies are doing their best to make efficient machines. Since Energy Star ratings cover the entire appliance, not simply specific settings, these are the best appliances to buy when looking for efficiency. Since the Energy Star-certified appliance is already using less resources, and therefore costing less money, the economy settings will make it even better.

A non-certified appliance with economy settings may seem like a good idea, but it may simply be using less relative to its usual consumption, which is too high to begin with.

Use Economy Settings Appropriately

Economy settings use less water and electricity, but they can also be for specific situations. Using the economy settings outside of these specific situations may result in you spending more money overall on electricity and water.

For example, the economy setting on a washing machine isn’t great for high capacity loads, simply because the required water would be too much to do the job effectively. The result would be running two or even three economy loads versus one regular load. Since economy settings are rarely two to three times more efficient, you would end up using more electricity and water doing the multiple economy loads compared to a regular load. So when you’re using economy settings, be sure to use them wisely.

Make Sure You Use Professional Installers

An energy efficient appliance is only as good as the installation and systems running it. If your plumbing system is old and inefficient, then your new Energy Star dishwasher will also be inefficient. And if your brand new washing machine is installed incorrectly, it won’t reap the benefits you expect.

The easiest way to get the most out of your energy-conscious machines is to have them professionally installed by a certified tradesman. Not only can they make sure everything is running smoothly, but they can ensure that your plumbing or electrical systems are well-equipped to run your new appliances at their best.

Economy settings can help your appliances run better, but only if you make the right choices when buying, installing, and using your energy efficient appliances.
