Fall is upon us and winter is just around the corner, now is the time to take a few steps to ensure your plumbing will last over the winter. You’ll want to make sure that your home, and plumbing are in order when that frigid cold weather finally is upon us. Remember, before you take any steps make sure you fully understand what is involved and be certain you understand what you are doing by reading the manufacturer’s instructions (we’re looking at you water heater pressure valve).
Double-check Your Water Heater
Now is the perfect time to make sure that your water heater is functioning at top notch. There are a couple of things you can do to inspect it and make sure that its fully operational. First, you’ll need to check your heaters pressure valve. Do this by turning off the electricity powering your water heater or if you have a gas heater just switch the thermostat to the pilot setting. Next, get a bucket and put it below the pressure valve. Now activate the valves trip lever, if you have a fully functional water heater you should see a surge of vapour, air, or even a bit of water. If this is not the case, or if you don’t feel comfortable checking your water heaters pressure valve you can trust your local Toronto plumbers to come and take a look at it.
Going Away? Prepare Your Plumbing for Extended Absence
If you plan on going away during the winter holidays it’s a very good idea to take a few precautionary measures, to ensure that nothing serious happens while you’re gone. First, before you leave turn off your water main. Second, run all your taps so that there is absolutely no water in your plumbing system. Third, make sure that your heating stays on and is set to a minimum of 14C, this will make sure that your plumbing will not freeze. These steps will make sure that in the event of a burst or broken pipe, water leaks, or any other plumbing problem you will not come home to a disastrous situation.
